Andrew Thomson is a management consultant specialising in innovation, motivation and creating success in organisations. He works on larger change management projects. These include current roles as CEO of Association of Colleges in the Eastern Region (ACER) and as a project director for college mergers. He has worked on a variety of mergers in the colleges and wider public sector, as principal, project manager and strategy advisor.
Angela has enjoyed a wide range of posts, from managing her own business to that of a senior manager in further education. Enticed into the education sector in 1988 as a part time lecturer Angela has focused her career in further education from that point forward.
After many years as a successful senior manager, in further education, Angela set up her own business as a management consultant, working nationally on a range of different assignments within the education sector. After seven successful years, Angela was asked to take up a permanent role as Vice Principal at Otley College seeing the college through to merger and the first inspection of the newly formed Easton and Otley College.
Since April 2014 Angela has worked as an interim manager and management coach.
Beri was a college principal for over six years and has a track record previous to this of having worked her way up through all areas of post 16 education. Experienced in implementing management strategies which have led to rapid improvement of academic quality, expansion and success. Experienced in the development of new-build and capital development. An experienced FE leader with particular expertise in quality, curriculum, leadership, governance and leadership and management training. Mentor and coaching specialisms. Former college Vice Principal with strategic and operational responsibilities in adult learning environments. Experienced in project management and policy development.
Chris has 22 years’ senior management experience in sixth form colleges, 18 of which as principal of BHASVIC. As principal Chris led the college to grow by 2.5 times and move from Ofsted ‘satisfactory’ to ‘outstanding’. For eleven years he served as a governor at the University of Brighton, the last four as Vice Chair of Governors. He also has governance experience of academies and free schools. Though he has some expertise in the areas of financial planning and management of capital projects, he will probably be most useful in issues concerning quality improvement; leadership, management and governance; and organisational culture.
With over 25 years experience in the sector behind me I am currently an Ofsted inspector and a lead inspector for the Independent schools inspectorate (ISI). I also quality assure Ofsted inspections, edit reports and investigate complaints.
I have held senior positions in colleges and work-based learning providers. As a consultant I have successfully supported providers to address poor inspection results and improve low success rates. Recent projects involved managing data, motivating staff, subcontractor, management, improving assessment strategies and improving employer engagement in order to meet local and regional needs.
I have delivered training on the new Common Inspection Framework with its emphasis on Prevent, Safeguarding, British values, and personal development, behaviour and welfare.
I have enhanced DBS clearance and CTC for work in prisons and young offender institutions.
Des is a specialist in all aspects of the strategic management and operation of land based colleges. He has served on the board of Landex. He has many years’ experience as the principal of a successful land based college and has a highly successful track record of estates development from revenue rather than capital grant.
Ian has many years’ experience as a senior manager in further education corporations, is a former Assistant Principal, a Director of Curriculum, a Director of Estates and a Senior Designated Person for Safeguarding and Child Protection. He has been involved in most aspects of Further Education from curriculum design to resourcing and had direct responsibility for apprenticeships and a merchant navy centre. During his career, he has been an external examiner for a number of Higher Education Institutions and the Army. He has been on the inspectorate for over 20 years and currently inspects a wide range of provision. His expertise covers all areas of quality improvement, inspection preparation, SAR drafting etc.
James (Jim) Aleander
Jim is a specialist in strategic governance and college leadership. He is Vice Chair of the board at Portland College, Nottinghamshire, an independent specialist college. Currently, Jim is advising on Area Review practice and implementation in several locations. He has served as principal of three general further education colleges. As interim principal at South Leicestershire College he led it into the first hard federation following the Education Act 2011, when SLC federated with North Warwickshire and Hinckley College under a single principal in 2013 (with a subsequent merger). Jim has written national guidance for colleges on self-assessment and on leadership of equality and diversity.
Jon has previously been a FE senior and middle college manager, undertaking a number of Strategic and Operational roles. For the last twenty years he has provided support to the FE sector through working as a lead consultant and coach on a variety of national and regional projects focussing on management development, quality improvement, curriculum development, teaching and learning, vocational learning, change and commercialisation. He has specialised in continuous improvement, service delivery and management development and coaching, as well as supporting colleges develop their management learning strategies and approaches. Additionally, he is a commercial strategic marketing consultant who has worked with and mentored and coached in, organisations across the UK and Europe.

Marina was Ofsted’s Deputy Director for Further Education and Skills. Since leaving Ofsted in 2015 Marina has specialised in supporting senior leaders to rapidly improve the quality of provision by helping them define their priorities and focus their resource and efforts to have the greatest impact. She is particularly interested in working with organisations who quickly need to improve their leadership and management and the quality of their teaching and learning, and who aspire to be good or outstanding. She remains a practising Ofsted inspector.
