It is critical that, in this phase of the life of FE Sussex, it is working towards developing strong cultures of learning within and across the member colleges. All CPD will be designed so that it -

4 Supports quality improvement and is cost effective
4 Is driven by the colleges themselves, as a result of identified and agreed core and college specific priorities which clearly relate to national drivers for change
4 Is flexible and imaginative enough to be sustainable, ensuring continuous learning and improvement across FE Sussex
4 Is less about the provision of a wide range of training courses, and more about the provision of high quality consultancy for member colleges
4 Creates the possibility for colleges themselves to control and manage the CPD agenda, with a minimal, supportive role played by the FE Sussex core team
4 Is designed against a clear set of quality improvement targets and standards, and its impact measured (i.e. is evaluated and changed where appropriate)

CPD activities from September 2006

Action plans and activities for 2006/09 will be informed by the results of the detailed diagnosis of need undertaken between now and the end of this academic year. It would not, therefore, be appropriate to put the ‘flesh on the bones’ of a CPD strategy at this stage. However, it may be reasonable to assume that the following activities will continue in some form or other -

4 Continued consultancy and training support for colleges to improve leadership and management, involving governors where appropriate
4 Rapid response seminars dealing with emergent issues
4 Sharing of excellence across the region, and drawing on best practice from elsewhere in the UK (using rapid response, website and conference as instruments)
4 Provision of skills based training where core needs are identified

CPD for Non-FE Sussex Members

We have a large selection of CPD programmes available that can be purchased from FE Sussex. One of our most successful programmes is the First Manager Programme: -

This programme takes place over a period of 3.5 days and has been designed for both support staff and for curriculum Managers; it is proposed that groups are mixed to encourage cross college learning.

Who should attend: This programme is targeted at those managers who are either new to management, or who have had little if any training or development in this area.

The introductory, or ‘core’ programme is mandatory, for all managers targeted for the development. The programme has been designed so that participants will:

4Develop their understanding of management and leadership in a learning environment, and what this means in terms of actions and behaviors.
4Develop clear understanding of the distinction between management and leadership
4Develop understanding and skills in developing performance in others – setting clear targets, monitoring performance and giving constructive feedback and guidance
4Explore change leadership and change management – developing an understanding of the psychology of change and what it means to lead effectively in times of change
4Consider the value of maintaining a culture of personal development and plan for continued learning

Following the 3.5 day 'core' programme, we then offer a series of workshops that are very practical and focus on developing a toolkit of leadership and management strategies. These workshops have been designed to build on the the 'core' programme or can be delivered as free - standing sessions, whichever is felt appropriate.
