SEEDA
SEEDA is the Government funded agency set up in 1999 responsible for the economic and social development of the South East of England - the driving force of the UK’s economy.

The economy of the region is the 22nd largest in the world, bigger than several countries including Denmark, Austria, Sweden, South Africa, Singapore and Greece. As home to over eight million people, it is the largest region in the UK - bigger than Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland combined, and covers the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and East and West Sussex.

SEEDA’s aim is to create a prosperous, dynamic and inspirational region by helping businesses compete more effectively, training a highly skilled workforce, supporting and enabling our communities, while safeguarding our natural resources and cherishing our rich cultural heritage.

SEEDA aims to be a catalyst for change within the South East, working with partner organisations- businesses, education at all levels, local authorities, Government agencies, voluntary and community organisations and many others - to produce clearly recognisable results.

SEMTA: The Sector Skills Council for Science, Engineering & Manufacturing Technologies
Every business depends on the skills and abilities of its people to drive its productivity, growth and success. Industry owned and led, Semta aims to increase the impact of skilled people throughout the science, engineering and manufacturing technologies sectors.

They work with the employers in their sectors to ascertain their current and future skills needs and to provide short and long term skills solutions, whether that be training and skills development, or campaigning with government and other organisations that can change things for the better. Through their labour market intelligence and insights from employers across their sectors, they identify change needed in education and skills policy and practice and engage with key industry partners and partners in the education and training sector to help increase productivity at all levels in the workforce. The sectors they represent are: Aerospace, Automotive, Bioscience, Electrical, Electronics, Maintenance, Marine, Mathematics, Mechanical, Metals and Engineered Metal Products.

SETPOINT Sussex
The focus for teachers, business and industry to obtain information about resources, schemes and initiatives concerned with science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

SETPOINT Sussex is a member of STEMNET - the national organisation for the promotion of STEM and is funded by the DTI.

The target is to offer every young person in each key stage (KS1-KS4 and post-16) the opportunity to participate in an appropriate science, technology, engineering or mathematics activity linking schools to industry.

SETPOINT Sussex provides:
• A ‘one stop shop’ for information on STEM resources, schemes and initiatives
• A calendar of events in and around Sussex
• A database of providers of STEM activities
• Information about careers and education
• Valuable resources for teachers, parents and students
• Links for more information
SETPOINT Sussex website has now been replaced by http://www.stemsussex.co.uk which the SETPOINT now manages.

STEMNET
STEMNET (previously SETNET) aims to ensure that more young people in the UK make a choice to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related careers at all levels, and future generations are properly informed about the science and technology that surrounds them.

With the support of its partners, STEMNET achieves this in two ways:
1) By bringing science, technology, engineering and mathematics activities, experiences and excitement in to classrooms throughout the UK, enhancing and enriching the national STEM curriculum.
2) By linking those companies and other organisations that employ STEM educated people, and schools, in such a way that young people can get a clear idea of the diverse and exciting range of careers available to them.

STEMNET has received funding from the Department of Trade and Industry since 1996 and has continued to enjoy support from the DTI and DfES since then. As a national organisation, it works hard to ensure that no region of the country is disadvantaged, by comparison with any other, with respect to STEM opportunities.

Sussex Learning Network
The Sussex Learning Network (SLN) came into being in September 2005. It is a partnership of universities, colleges, training providers and guidance agencies who together want to transform the opportunities for vocational learners in Sussex.

Our aim is to offer learners the chance to benefit from higher education wherever they live or work in Sussex. This means employees, employers, professionals working in higher or further education or individuals thinking about developing or changing their career.

British Association for the Advancement of Science
The British Association for the Advancement of Science (The BA) exists to create a positive social climate in which science, and the organisations dependent on it, advances with public consent and with the involvement and active support of non-scientists. They seek to achieve that by connecting science with people: promoting openness about science in society and affirming science as a prime cultural force through engaging and inspiring adults and young people directly with science and technology, and their implications.
